listening to this now. excellent share. thanks.
ReplyDeleteThanks Katonah. This album has long been sitting in my stack of things to rip and you've saved me the trouble. Not the best version of "Fancy Free" but that's one of my favorite songs.
ReplyDeleteLineup of the week or what ? Some really nice stuff here Katonah - not quite sure about Dolly's vocal track but really taken with most of it - and Cowell on rhodes is, of course, like shooting fish in a barrel for me :) . Cowell's wife on cover design ?
ReplyDeleteThank you.
ReplyDeletewell spotted simon, that's not to say that it's design is any good.
ReplyDeletei won't be hangin it on the wall !!
sort of garden furniture, lattice fence panel theme running thru it.
terrible
think you're right about the fancy free track ish. must be '77 an all that
We r added you on our fav links...any problem?
ReplyDeleteBest regards Katonah

yea, joe henderson's in the corner thinking "i just knocked my pipe out laying down some dope jazz, and that's the best you can do with the cover???"
ReplyDeleteshe must have been good at something to the get contract, that's all i'm sayin' ....
Awesome lineup--thanks very much Katonah. I don't think Richard Davis ever made a bad album, in my opinion.
ReplyDeleteYep, not one of the great illustrators of our time, check the Tom Waits cover for concept : design distance :) Could have exploded the ikea fence to make the background for this one ? She's not the messiah, but a very naughty girl
ReplyDeletei guess we should leave it at that...
ReplyDeletemay start a blog: crapjazzcovers.blogspot.com
that albeen one with the dulux dog on the front would be another contender...
thanks simon, never knew she was responsible for so many covers.
ReplyDelete@greg, put me down for hutcherson's knucklebean sleeve.
what a stinker
Now, Now that cover was way head of its time, 80's decadence – done in 77, maybe lucinda did it???
ReplyDeleteOnly kidding off to room 101 for that... PINK???? not exactly inner glow is it except for the swoosh effects that is...
Worst thing blue note ever did was loose reid miles - perhaps the greatest graphic designer of all time defo in my book that is...
Right where did i put me vod???
off to rip tapscott greg.
ReplyDeletethere could be some huge run ins, and short cut offs, human error caused by jim bean ...
I think it's very unfair that you Brits are talking all about drinking and getting on with your weekend while those of us on this side of the Atlantic are still stuck at work with no access to our own collection of badly designed album covers or bottles of bourbon!
ReplyDeletehic!!!
ReplyDeleteCheck out my shit collection of posts... Think ill have to use 'SHIT COVER' as a tag me thinks – Looking forward to Tapscott, make my shit decade that will katonah!!!
ish your time will come soon enough ;)
Hey Katonah--
ReplyDeleteThis was an old favorite
I had lost & long forgot about.

Deeply depressed here, my extensive Harold Vick post has simply disappeared into the ether, with no backup .... ummm ... I don't suppose any of you copied the 75 album session discography from there? Chance in a million I know. arggghhh
ReplyDeleteFortunately it's still in the GOogle cache, Simon, I've sent you a URL and a download of the source code.
ReplyDeleteWonder what happened!
Jesus ... thanks to Ish's ingenuity I've managed to regenerate it from the cache, thanks so much Ish.
ReplyDeleteSorry for the thread hijack! Please return to discussion of Richard Davis' music and Lucinda Cowell's design skills .... :)
hi guys,
ReplyDeletejust ran into another Davis here
(ish, i've put the link on the Muse blog too) :
http://thingsstuffandmusic.blogspot.com/2008/07/richard-davis-dealin.html
"This album was released on Muse in 1974. The first side is made up of a couple of funky jazz groovers while the second side is on a more mellow tip. The session is led by bassist Richard Davis, who also wrote the tunes. Marvin Peterson is on trumpet, Clifford Jordan on saxophone, Paul Griffin plays Piano, Rhodes, Organ and Clavinet, David Spinozza plays guitar and Freddie Waits is on drums.

ReplyDeletethanks, been hitting your place quite a lot lately
I have a book, "Songmaster" written by Orson Scott Card (and signed by him) with cover art by Lucinda Cowell. I would like to contact her about signing the book as the cover artist. Can anyone assist me in contacting her, please?
ReplyDeleteMichael C. Phifer

No, but if you find her, tell her we need her for a conference/symposium on jazz cover art. She'll be on a panel with graphic designer Noreen Bonker, a hippo who wears glasses, and a woman who wears puppets as breast adornments.
ReplyDeleteOh simon you di'in't!
ReplyDeleteHere's the first of several references, Collector:
http://nicealbumshameaboutthecover.blogspot.com/2008/10/richard-davis-fancy-free.html
enjoy.
Man no end to her talents - I have to get me a copy of that book... One condition of the conference it has to be in sidney... We will all be digging simons dj skills at his club funk the conference!
ReplyDeleteNice book shame about the cover anyone?
That's it, off to work with something else to fill my journey in with. Thanks, Katonah, I'm sure I'll enjoy it.
ReplyDeleteJust found your blog searching for this... and the link is dead!
ReplyDeleteAny chance of a re-up? Nice blog!
I've just found this too. Any chance of a re-up I've not seen this elsewhere. On a Joe Henderson kick...
ReplyDeleteBe really grateful!

ReplyDeleteThanks! Excellent album, and never reissued on CD. 70s jazz albums can be a bit hit and miss, but this by far exceeded my expectations. It was probably helped by the superior jazz standards included, and the sidemen are stellar too.
ReplyDeletecould you please reup this album :)
ReplyDeleteits nowhere else to find
