Joni Mitchell : Hits
Something a little different, but still with some "plenty good" tunes on here. Picked this up after Four Hero (who were sitting in on Gilles Peterson's show) dropped the track Help Me (Joe Sample, Tom Scott). Steven Stills plays some top bass on Carey. I've clipped a couple of later recorded tracks from the full compilation, and you ain't missing nothing there. Great stuff.
Urge for Going ; 1967
Chelsea Morning ; 1969
Big Yellow Taxi ; 1970
Woodstock ; 1970
The Circle Game ; 1970
Carey ; 1971
California ; 1971
Help Me ; 1974
River ; 1971

ReplyDeleteWas first into her thirty years ago, and while my tastes have tended to change constantly since then, she's someone that I do return to. Katonah, if you don't know it, delve into "The Hissing Of Summer Lawns" (1975) :

nice one Simon, not heard this one before. big thanks
ReplyDeleteI think I like her best when she was on her 'way into' jazz. So there's that one and the one after it. "Heijira", which is also something of a Jaco Pastorius feature. Here's a good rip :

top man. just grabbing these right now. got a funny feeling the burner could busy later on ;)
ReplyDeleteThe one before those two was "Court and Spark", the intial foray into some jazzy bits (including "Help Me", the one you liked)
ReplyDeleteLots of low bitrate versions around but found a better one :
* Court and Spark"
http://ciendesalame.blogspot.com/2009/04/court-and-spark-joni-mitchell-1974.html
So they're essentially my three favourite Joni albums.
After that she dives a little more headlong into jazz for two albums - "Don Juan's Reckless Daughter" and "Mingus". I don't like them quite as much, though others may disagree. Worth checking out though!
* "Don Juan's Reckless Daughter" (1977 - Jaco Pastorius, Wayne Shorter etc) :

* "Mingus" (1979)
http://mimusicaenflac.blogspot.com/2009/01/joni-mitchell-mingus-1979.html
Lineup : Joni Mitchell (guitar, vocals) Wayne Shorter (soprano saxophone) Herbie Hancock (electric piano) Jaco Pastorius (bass, horn arrangement) Peter Erskine (drums) Don Alias (congas) Emil Richards (percussion) and , from memory, Charles Mingus on vocals ...
Hmmm maybe I shoukd listen to it sgain now that I'm older and into jazz :)
After that she moved a little more back into singer/songwriter mode (sorta) and nothing really grabbed me for long ...
Thanks simon, that line up looks very special, this should keep me busy right thru the weekend.
ReplyDeleteJoni is my fave of all time. "Don Juan's Reckless Daughter" is the last full album I like though; gets spotty aftewards. I can't say much nice bout that Mingus album. "For The Roses" is the best I'm-having-a-life-crisis listen ever.
ReplyDeleteAnd believe it or not, if I may utter this name here, Mandy Moore has a TERRIFIC cover of "Help Me" on her seventies tribute album.
jsut googled your reccomendation ish.!! more britney and kylie to follow

She also did another 'greatest hits' (issued at the same time), called 'Misses' which you never see anywhere
ReplyDelete@Simon I'm older now and into jazz but I still don't like "Mingus" and "Don Juan" as much as her other albums, first of all the already mentioned Court And Spark, Hejira, Blue or For The Roses ;)
ReplyDelete@Ish Joni is a goddess!
@Katonah I do have all her albums, so if there's a need...
I also recommend the 2002-album Travelogue as an alternative to other greatest-hits-compilations. The review on AMG is very appropriate: http://www.allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll?p=amg&sql=10:k9fyxqwaldae
Well here's the discography, including all (I think) that have been mentioned :

Re that Mandy Moore clip : It's a good faithful version. That pic is funny, head slightly chopped off in order to centralise the tits. I'm gay and I still spent the whole song staring at her cleavage LOL
Think its all been said
ReplyDeleteFor my pennyworth she's one of my faves of all time Court & Spark being the best
Dont miss Shadows & Light DVD , Brecker , Pastorious, Metheny, Alias amazing cheap at amazon etc
Wow Joni fever, thank you guys for all shouts!!
ReplyDeletemrs. mitchell rules.
ReplyDeleteas reza says, her best is probably her live album "shadows & lights" feat. michael brecker, jaco pastorius, pat metheny, lyle mays and don alias. the dvd is great to see these cats jammin' together except for the best track "hejira", where brecker plays the soprano sax-a very rare treat. problem is most of the track shows some kind of ridiculous holiday-on-ice choregraphy that totally spoils it... it's woth a few $ at mazon anyway
think i need to check shadows and lights .. thanks for all the comments.
ReplyDeleteSomeone sent me a link to his Taringa post , lots of Joni Mitchell albums and bootlegs :

gotta second all that emotion...
ReplyDeleteJoni is just one of the greats, and a longtime flame for me (unrequited of course)
I caught her Shadows and Light tour in San Francisco - boy does that date me...
That and Hejira, the ones for me...
nice one, thanks Simon
