Art Farmer Septet : Homecoming.

Just can't stop hitting this baby at the moment. There's some killer, toe tappin', finger snappin', rug cuttin' joints on here. Picked it initially up for the stellar line-up which includes, Jimmy Heath, Cedar Walton, Sam Jones, Warren Smith, Billy Higgins and Mtume !!! Not only that, there's a couple of bonus tracks tacked on the end which were recorded live at Heidelberger Jazztage, Germany in 1972. This line-up includes Horst Muhbradt, Niels-Henning Orsted Pedersen and Tony Inzalaco.

Some words;

First time on CD for the 1971 album by Jazz great Art Farmer featuring two additional bonus tracks recorded live the following year. A homecoming for Art Farmer is beyond the surface implications of the album title. It is veritably a happy musical homecoming for the ears of the Jazz world at large. Incidentally, the title selection promptly invites one to celebrate, revel and swing with the album. This album brings out his growing awareness and developmental capabilities. Jimmy Heath and Cedar Walton are musicians he has worked with regularly during his trips back to the States. The strong smooth mixture of emotion, logical order, and the sound of surprise clothe the program with heat, excitement and variety As a bonus to this splendid album, which appears here on CD for the first time ever, we have added two rare Farmer items, which also make their CD debuts on this edition. Both were recorded on June 4, 1972, during the Heidelberger Jazztage Festival in Heidelberg, Germany and find Farmer playing with Danish bassist Niels-Henning Orsted Pedersen. Seven tracks. The track is called Special Project, which according to the liner notes is where:

"the full might of the Chaquito crew is dramatically unleashed".

Apparently, it was used as a signature tune for an independent television series.

Picked up this (poorly) private pressed album for the Solenius Smith, Shamek Farrah, Strata East connections. For the most part, the set plays it fairly safe with all originals penned by Mitchell, Hammond and Smith. However, the atmosphere of the recording is compelling with snatches of conversation between the players evident on the long run-ins. Nice

The trail to the Holy Grail !?!

Finally, after years of fruitless searching, this Strata East, mother of all rarities, is among us.

Don Rendell with the Joe Palin Trio

Don Rendell and the Joe Palin Trio live at the Avgarde Gallery Manchester.

From the liner notes:

Pete is present again on Antibes (Don on Tenor) and contributes a counter figure which Rendell insists is an improvement on the original arrangement for the Space Walk version of the tune. In fact Don feels that, generally, these new readings of the three Space Walk pieces benefit from his having worked them over a couple of times in public after the release of the Columbia album.

Here's a nice loose, bluesy version of Antibes. Don Rendell is accompanied by Joe Palin on Piano, Ian Taylor on Bass, Gordon Beckett on Drums and Pete Martin on Flugel Horn. Not sure if this version lives up to the studio take from Space Walk, but well worth a listen all the same. Btw, the vinyl has definitely seen better days.
